Exhibition design and archival photo restoration for a prominent outdoor installation in Helsinki commemorating the 20th anniversary of the EU’s historic 2004 enlargement.
The project originated as a collaborative initiative between ten European Union embassies in Finland, seeking to display an eye-catching outdoor exhibition outside Helsinki’s Central Library Oodi.
Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement, the project required a careful diplomatic balancing act to align the narratives of all participating nations.
My role involved coordinating these diverse contributions, acting as the interface between diplomatic requirements and public-facing design.
I conducted a thorough curation process, selecting the four most impactful photographs for each nation from the larger pool of archival materials provided.
To ensure visual cohesion and integrity of the collection at a massive scale, I performed extensive restoration and utilized advanced upscaling techniques on the original low-resolution photography.
I then translated this content into a coherent spatial narrative, designing a dedicated introductory stand to frame the historical context and guide the visitor’s journey.
The exhibition was physically realized as 21 large-scale (1×2 meter) vinyl panels mounted on seven triangular metal stands strategically placed in the public square.
The result was a vibrant, accessible gateway to European history, transforming the raw historical records into a resonant public encounter in the heart of the city.
